Dare to Dream

Jun 20, 2013 6pm

Sheraton Hotel, Madison, Wisconsin
The powerful documentary film, Boys and Men Healing, will be presented free of charge at the Sheraton Hotel in Madison at 6:00 p.m. on June 20 in conjunction with an earlier conference on child sex abuse survival sponsored by several Wisconsin organizations.

The film is part of “Dare to Dream”, a program of MaleSurvivor, a nationwide organization dedicated to overcoming sexual victimization of boys and men. It will be followed by a panel discussion led by MaleSurvivor’s Christopher Anderson and Mike Deninger.

Anderson is the Executive Director of MaleSurvivor and has spoken frequently about his own survival and about the issues of male survivorship. He was one of the more than 200 male survivors who appeared on Oprah Winfrey’s historic episode on male sexual abuse and is also the co-founder of Males for Trauma Recovery. He joined MaleSurvivor in 2007. Deninger is a Board member of MaleSurvivor and has worked as a private practice counselor, trainer, writer, inspirational speaker, and a specialist in the treatment of trauma and PTSD for the last 15 years. He is also the author of Snakes in My Dreams: A Mental Health Therapist’s Odyssey from Hardship to Healer.

Boys and Men Healing is a documentary that explores the impact of child sex abuse of males on both the victim and on society, as well as the importance of survivors healing and speaking out about their experiences. It features honest and moving interviews with several survivors. The MaleSurvivor panelists will lead the audience through a discussion of the film and talk about resources in a safe and comfortable environment. Trained counselors will be available for anyone who may need to speak with someone during or after the film and discussion. The event is free and open to the public.

Local activist Callen Harty decided he wanted to bring the film here and after arranging that with MaleSurvivor and getting support from other organizations it was decided to hold the day-long conference, Paths to Healing: Conference on Child Sex Abuse Survival. The conference will be held at the Sheraton earlier in the day and will offer several presentations on child sex abuse survival.

Sponsored by Solidarity with Child Sex Abuse Victims/Survivors, Rape Crisis Center, Wisconsin Coalition Against Sexual Assault (WCASA), OutReach Inc., Family Sexual Abuse Treatment, Canopy Center, Proud Theater, and Friends of the State Street Family the day-long conference will focus on healing and survival, particularly among male victims, an often underserved population in the sexual assault advocacy community. For more information on either the film or the conference contact Callen Harty at (608) 469-6686.
