When you think of soldiers, you don't typically think of those working in the medical field. However, a local soldier is helping treat those affected by war.
Corporal Matthew Frost grew up in Baraboo. A year and a half ago he decided to serve as an active duty soldier. Now he's in Iraq helping heal others. He serves with the 86th combat support hospital based in Fort Campbell, Kentucky. "He loves what he does," explains his wife Christina.
Corporal Frost is a pharmacy specialist who shipped out for Iraq in October. "We weren't expecting this to happen so soon," said Christina about her husbands deployment.
It's been difficult for Christina. While her husband is filling presumptions, making IV's and tending to the medical needs of those in Iraq, she's going through a pregnancy without her husband. The couple found out they were pregnant, two months later her husband left for Mosul, Iraq. "It has been hard, especially with expecting our first baby and just him not being able to be here for a lot of things that dad's are here for," said Christina fighting back tears.
She is thankful for family and friends who've supported her and her husband during this time. Their little girl is due April 18th and with any luck Matthew will make it home in time for her delivery. He is to come home a few days before the due date for an 18 day break. "We are going to do whatever we can to keep her in there so her daddy can be here when she's born," smiled Christina.
When thee baby is born, her loving mom has lots to tell her about her daddy. "I am very proud of him! I always have been and I told him the other day that he was my hero and he said, 'Why am I your hero? There's so many other people out there fighting and they should be your hero?'," explained Christina.
From the Corporal Frost's humanitarian efforts in Nicaragua, to helping soldiers get golf clubs and de-stress in Iraq, to leaving his pregnant wife to go off an serve in a war, Corporal Frost is an unsung hero.
The Frost's little girl just couldn't wait she came Thursday, March 27th at 11:07 a.m. We are also happy to report, Corporal Frost was able to catch the birth via a webcam. They named her Keegan Marie Frost and she was a healthy seven pounds, six ounces and 19 inches long.
Here's a few other really neat things about the Frost's. He makes videos to send home every month talking to his wife and baby girl. Corporal Frost is expected to be home for good in February of 2009.
