Big Quake Shakes Oklahoma For As Much As A Minute

Posted Sunday, November 6, 2011 --- 10:40 a.m.

SPARKS, Okla. (AP) -- Residents in Oklahoma are shaken after the state's strongest earthquake ever and a big aftershock.

Saturday night's magnitude 5.6 earthquake was centered near Sparks, 44 miles northeast of Oklahoma City. It was followed early Sunday by a 4.0 aftershock.

Sparks resident Jesse Richards says the big earthquake shook for as much as a minute. One of his wife's cookie jars fell on the kitchen floor and shattered, and pictures hanging on their living room walls were knocked askew. He says his wife ran outside because she was afraid the house would collapse.

Richards says earthquakes are getting to be regular occurrences in the area, but he hopes he never gets used to them.

Oklahoma had more than 1,000 earthquakes last year. Most were small.
