The NBC 15 Weather Authority is declaring Monday January 21st a Weather Authority Alert Day.

While high temperatures tomorrow are expected to top out around 3 degrees, the wind chills pose a dangerous and potentially life threatening hazard, especially for anyone who may be outside for an extended period of time.

The National Weather Service has issued a Wind Chill Advisory for our entire area that goes into effect over night and will stay valid through noon on Tuesday.

Wind chill values during the day on Monday are expect to be between -14° F and -20° F. Monday night into Tuesday morning is expected to be the most dangerous period low temperatures will fall to around -10° F with wind chill values dropping to anywhere from -20° F to -30° F.

These types of wind chills can be very dangerous for anyone outside for a prolonged period of time. Frost bite to exposed skin is possible after 20 to 30 minutes of being outside with wind chill values this low. Hypothermia also becomes a concern so it is important to remember not to spend much time outdoors and if you must be outdoors, the National Weather Service has a few tips to keep in mind.

-Wear layers of light but warm clothing to help trap heat between the layers of clothing.

-Wear a hat. 40% of our body heat escapes through our head.

-Cover your mouth to protect your lungs from extreme cold.

-Mittens, snug at the wrists, are better than gloves.

-Try to stay dry and out of the wind.
