SAFEwalk is a program that sends out teams of two to walk with students on campus who request it. Everyday, they provide their services from 8 at night to 1 in the morning. But, some feel it could be better.
"My last day was on April 29," stated Dana DeMet.
Earlier this week DeMet and 10 of his fellow SAFEwalk employees quit, saying that management was not listening to their concerns.
Said DeMet, "The administration chose not to listen to our cries for help in terms of more staffing, better supervisors and higher standards. And even after our multiple requests by letters or petitions or e-mails to the people in charge if they were not going to listen I didn't feel that it was necessary for me to give them my time anymore."
But, the school says turnover is normal this time of year and those positions have already been filled.
Gordon Graham is a transportation administrator and says that changes needed to be made to meet the demand of the program. He says this situation is being blown out of proportion.
"We have looked at the number of walks that they have conducted on a nightly bases and it really is a manageable number for the amount of staff they have."
Over the past year, the program's numbers have slightly decreased. They currently have 22 escorts, down three from last year. And they also have one less escort team during the week. But, there was a spike in requests after the murder of Brittany Zimmermann. Before her death SAFEwalk averaged 10 requests a night. The week after the murder that number jumped to 17. It has since gone back to ten.
"We are trying to hold ourselves to a higher standard but the administration is not listening to what we need to do," concluded DeMet.
Added Graham, "Campus transportation services is fully committed to the program and we are looking forward to being closer aligned to university priorities and department needs."
On occasion, there have been some callers that could not be escorted by a walker in which case a free cab is offered.
On May 14, Graham will meet with the disgruntled students to try to come to an agreement.
