**OFFICIAL RELEASE FROM MADISON FIRE**

10 Madison residents are being assisted by Red Cross after a fire left their apartment building uninhabitable.

City of Madison firefighters were called to 617 N. Oak St. at 10:34 a.m. Saturday. Engine Company 8 arrived to find flames venting out of a first level window facing the street. Flames traveled up the outside of the building and into the attic.

Residents of the 8-unit building self-evacuated with some help from neighbors who alerted them to the fire. One resident was injured slightly after jumping from a second-story window. He reported attempting to escape through the front door of his apartment and meeting heavy smoke in the hallway. He closed his door and escaped from a rear window. Another person from the second floor was transported to the hospital with unspecified injuries. They were not believed to be life-threatening.

Firefighters brought the fire under control within 30 minutes of their arrival. Damages are estimated at $200,000. The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Few of the occupants have renters insurance.

The City of Madison Fire Department reminds residents:
• In most cases, renters insurance costs under $100.00 a year. Renters insurance can help you replace items lost in a fire.
• If you are involved in a fire, close as many doors behind you as possible. Doors can help contain fire and smoke, reducing damage to other areas or apartments.
