More than 300 dollars from a local firefighters' union went to the Dollars for Brittany scholarship fund as friends of Zimmermann kicked off fundraising during Saturday's Mifflin Street Block Party. One month later, the 21-year-old's tragic murder is still fresh on everyone's minds.

"I just thought it was a good idea to bring awareness to it and just also help people remember to be safe," says Brittany's best friend, Jenna Krasselt.

The fundraiser was held right in the midst of the block party, now in it's 40th year, as UW students crowded the streets enjoying the annual celebration.

"We were just walking around, checking it out, taking pictures with random people and it's pretty fun," says UW freshman, Selena Alexander.

And while many are enjoying what Mifflin Street has to offer others are not forgetting to give back and keep the memory of Brittany Zimmermann alive.

"I saw that it was for Brittany Zimmermann and I was always concerned about that and I just wanted to get a piece of pizza because I was kind of hungry looking for food."

The money all goes to a scholarship fund for incoming UW students and the many pastries and pizza were donated by local businesses. So far $1,300 has been raise and those in charge are thankful Brittany's story can benefit the life of someone else.

"It's really been overwhelming," says Krasselt. "Even when people haven't been hungry they've been donating just money towards the fund without--I donated 6 dollars--see it's been very helpful everybody helping us out."

If you'd like to donate to the scholarship fund you can send a check or money order to:
