New law provides emergency contraception for rape victim

MADISON, Wis. (AP) -- Gov. Jim Doyle has signed into law a requirement that hospitals provide rape victims with emergency contraception upon their request.

Doyle was surrounded Thursday by rape victims, lawmakers and others who have worked for years to get the bill passed.

The bill requires Wisconsin emergency rooms to give information about the so-called morning-after pill to rape victims and dispense the drug at their request.

Democratic state Sen. Judy Robson of Beloit says the bill is a milestone for women's rights in Wisconsin.

Doyle says the state will be vigilant in following up with any complaints about hospitals not following the law.

Adding insult to injury by forcing a woman who was raped to carry the spawn of a monster is just wrong. Would you rather wait to have an abortion than take precaution? The religious people need to remember that it is not for them to take it. A responsible person would make sure that it is available to those who need it.

Wow,just wow. First off, that stupid old story about women who have drunken sex and then lie about being raped is just - stupid and insulting. Rape happens, people, quit letting the rapists off the hook. Secondly, the morning after pill is not an abortion pill. Read a book or something. Educate yourself. Finally, a woman who was raped is supposed to suffer even more because she happens to be taken to a religious hospital and they won't treat a living breathing ALREADY BORN HUMAN BEING with respect and compassion because she's actually just a baby incubator and the possibility that she just might be incubating a cell or two that might result in a pregnancy is much more important, MUCH MUCH more important than making sure she gets the care and support she needs? I'll pass on that religion, thank you. Women are human beings. Rape happens. Women deserve any available treatment or care that they can get in those situations. Skip the morning after pill and you'll see an abortion later.

Just because it is a Catholic hospital, it does not mean that everyone that works there and goes there are Catholic. Plus, not every Catholic believes everything the Bible says. Not only that, there is always something in our jobs we may not want to do but we do it because it is part of our job(assuming it does not mean breaking the law).

Is it fair to be raped, and get pregnant, and have a child that was unplanned by a man who did something so horrible?

It is for rape victims...as if being raped isn't traumatic enough for a woman do you really think she would want to have the rapist's baby?? AND she isn't forced to take the pill...its an option. SO what if the hospital worker is forced to ask... they aren't forced to push drugs on people. there is a difference.

How do we know if someone was really raped. How do we know that they don't just use that as a excuse for their behavior after drinking to much, and then saying that they were raped. If they don't want to get pregnant, have they ever heard of abstinance? I would only use that Pill in extreme circumstances. Each case should be lookd at individually. And, they should pay for tha Pill themselves, not the Tax payers.

Furthermore, NO ONE should force ANYTHING on the victim due to the fact they were already forced.

I have the understanding the hospital is providing this to the victim "AT THEIR REQUEST" They are not forcing anything on the victim.(If I'm understanding this correctly)

You obviously do not know how the pill works. No life form is ever killed.

Well said, Tim.

It is not right to force a hospital worker who knows that this pill kills a child to give it to a woman. This is especially relevant for a Catholic hospital like St. Mary's. With this type of legislation, we are going to lose our Catholic hospitals who have done so much for our health care system.
