Average cost of Thanksgiving dinner lowest in decade
The Farm Bureau estimates the 2020 cost to be $46.90 or less than $5.00 a person.
MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - Turkey and all the fixings remain affordable, even in a pandemic.
For 35 years, the American Farm Bureau Federation has put out an annual cost survey of the classic items found on the Thanksgiving Day dinner table.
This year’s survey indicates the average cost of this year’s Thanksgiving feast for 10 is $46.90 or less than $5.00 per person. This is a $2.01 decrease from last year’s average of $48.91.
On a day of giving thanks, many families are facing food insecurity. Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin says the pandemic is costing food banks twice as much to provide meals because of the demand.
1 in 9 people in Southwestern Wisconsin are dealing with hunger and the number of people facing food insecurity has gone up by 40 percent this year.
This year, you can help by donating to the NBC15 Share Your Holidays campaign. On December 2nd, bring non-perishable grocery items to the Alliant Energy Center for our Celebration Drive-Thru Food Drive.
You can also make a financial contribution directly to NBC15 Share Your Holidays by rounding up at your grocery store as part of Check Out Hunger or through the Second Harvest website.
Because of you, we are hoping to raise enough money to provide five million meals for families in need across 16 counties in Southern Wisconsin.
