Dane Co. Board to condemn hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) -The Dane County Board of Supervisors will be condemning hate crimes against Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders during its Thursday meeting.

The resolution states since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, anti-Asian hate crimes increased by 150% with more than 2,800 incidences of hate within the past year across the United States.

The measure not only condemns hate crimes, it also vows the Board will continue to strive to make Dane County a safe place for all.

“While it’s easy to think of the increase of Anti-AAPI hate incidences as only a nationwide occurrence, it is harming the members of our Dane County community, says County Board Supervisor Elena Haasl. “It is important to address and condemn this violence as a community, by taking action and putting in work to make Dane County a safe and equitable place for everyone.”

The resolution will go to the Executive Committee Wednesday evening. Pending the committee’s recommendation, the resolution will go to the full board.
