MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - The Madison Police Department is investigating after officers observed a stolen vehicle driving more than 25 miles above the speed limit Tuesday night downtown.

MPD reports officers were stationed around 4:15 p.m. on the 800 block of Gorham Street before James Madison Park, which is a 25 mile-per-hour zone. A vehicle sped by, police stated, which officers determined to be driving at 58 mph.

MPD officers tried to stop the vehicle, but said it continued to speed up and did not stop for a red light. Authorities decided not to pursue the vehicle out of an abundance of caution.

MPD later found the vehicle abandoned and crashed at the intersection of Wisconsin Avenue and Gorham Street. Officers then learned it had been stolen.

The department is still investigating this incident and anyone with information is urged to call MPD at 608-255-2345, or contact Madison Area Crime Stoppers at 608-266-6014, or online to remain anonymous.
