Sierra Gillespie

Weekend Anchor/Reporter

Connect With Me

Sierra Gillespie joined the NBC15 team in April 2019 as the weekend evening news anchor and reporter.

A Waunakee-native, Sierra jumped at the chance to move back to the Capital City when she saw an open position at the station she grew up watching.

Her interest in journalism began all the way back in high school, when she worked as an editor and columnist for Waunakee High School’s paper The Purple Sage. (She even won the Most Valuable Journalist award in 2011 – still to this day, it’s her favorite award yet!)

After high school, Sierra headed east to Muncie, Indiana, where she graduated from the David Letterman School of Journalism at Ball State University. While at Ball State, Sierra worked as an anchor and reporter for the award-winning, student-run newscast, NewsLink Indiana, and as an anchor for the college radio station, WCRD. During her collegiate summers, Sierra spent her time home in Madison, interning at WOLX, Triple M and The Mix radio stations.

After graduation, Sierra couldn’t resist the promise of cheese curds and Spotted Cow, and made her way back to America’s Dairyland to accept a job at WMTV’s sister station, WBAY-TV in Green Bay. Sierra began work as an overnight weekend producer in 2015, eventually working her way up through the ranks from behind the camera to in front of it, becoming an award-winning reporter and fill-in anchor at the station.

During her time at Action 2 News, Sierra’s work was recognized by the Wisconsin Broadcasters Association for Best Continuing Coverage for “Appleton Bar Shooting.” She was also honored by the Midwest Broadcast Journalists Association and received regional Sevareid Awards for Spot News and Social Media Coverage for “Tornado Outbreak” and “April Snow Storm.”

Sierra’s favorite type of news to cover is breaking news, on the scene. She feels most comfortable as a live reporter, without a script in her hand. Meeting interesting people and hearing their stories is one of her favorite parts of being a reporter, and she’s excited to get to know the City of Madison once again.

In her spare time, Sierra loves playing with her beloved Australian Shepherd Poodle mix, Dash, and eating cheese curds (and Ranch!) with her fiancé, Matt. She also enjoys binge watching Netflix originals, eating Chocolate Shoppe ice cream on State Street, and spending summer nights at The Union.
