Drowning in Housework

By  |

It’s 5 p.m. and as I look around me I realize the house is I complete disarray. The dishes are waiting to be loaded into the dishwasher, because the dishes inside are still waiting to be unloaded. The laundry is sorted, and in piles in the bedrooms, but that’s all the farther I got with it, and so we’ve been walking around the piles for a full day now. And counter space, no matter how much of it we have, every inch of it is currently taken up with some item that should not be there but remains anyway, patiently waiting for someone, anyone to notice, and dutifully return it to it’s home.

And so, like most other weeks, I am on a super woman sweep through the house on this evening, in spite of my tired feet, to whip things into shape around here.

It’s moments like this when I think there must be some better way to become more organized. I always seem to get it all done in bursts instead of the steady constant effort I strive for.

I’ve tried so many methods, and few of them seem to work. I get all sorts of clever ideas on Pinterest and other places. For all the clutter by the back door, I’ve recently tried to organize using one of those desk organizers from the office store and it helps, once you use it! I didn’t get mine labeled quite as nicely as the pictures I saw, but hey, I tried. And I do find that fewer things are actually lost now than before so it’s a step in the right direction.

I’ve tried baskets of all shapes and sizes to collect things like hats and gloves, dog toys, and magazines. But, all those do is fill up and then eventually over flow and become a project of their own. Why is that?

The big problem is, no matter what the system, someone has to run the show. Someone has to have the discipline to get it done, someone who apparently doesn’t live here! For me, the times when I should be putting away dishes seem better spent helping with homework projects or reading with my son.

Then, before you know it I’m too tired, and weak, and just surrender to letting it go one more day.

I am more than certain I’m not alone in this quest to have the perfectly organized house, where I come home from work and everything is in it’s place. I am more than happy with the baby steps I’ve already taken, but I am willing to try more.

If you have been able to find a better way will you share it?
