SHULLSBURG, Wis. (WMTV)---Authorities are investigating what may have caused a house fire early Wednesday morning that left one person dead in Lafayette County.

According to the Shullsburg Police Department, it happened on the 200 block of Victor Street in Shullsburg just before 2:30 a.m.

"I was waken[woken] up by knocking on the door, and hollering, and a lot of noise. My neighbor said that her house was on fire and to call the fire department," Janet Harker said.

Harker is a neighborhood friend of the homeowner and said she has lived in the house for a long time.

"Very sad. It's like a lot of things--why does it happen?" Harker said.

Police say four people were transported the nearby hospitals. Their ages, names, and conditions at this time are unknown.

The Department of Criminal Investigation (DCI) and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) are investigating. They don't believe the fire is suspicious at this time.
