MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - The City of Sun Prairie is investigating after discovering a data breach into its employee’s email accounts Thursday.
According to the Sun Prairie Star, the city is now notifying employees whose emails were breached, and providing them with ways to make sure a breach doesn’t happen in the future.
City officials discovered suspicious activity in one worker’s account on March 6. The discovery launched an investigation with the help of forensic experts to find out the scope of the hack.
The city later learned of unauthorized access to some employees' email accounts started as early as Jan. 16.
However, city’s investigation was not able to confirm what information was accessed by the hacker.
The affected email accounts may include Social Security numbers, account logins and passwords, driver licenses, bank and other financial account numbers, medical information and payment card information, the city says.
The City of Sun Prairie encourages its employees to review their account statements and to monitor credit reports for suspicious activity.
The city has setup a toll-free line for those who need further assistance, at 1-877-202-9025.
