Bail set for UW-Madison student charged with sexual assault

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV)---Bail has been set for a UW-Madison student charged with several counts of sexual assault.

Alec Cook, 20, was accused of raping another 20 year old UW student at his apartment earlier this month. But now more victims have come forward.

A Dane County Judge set a $200,000 cash bail for Cook on Thursday afternoon in a Dane County courtroom. According to the updated criminal complaint, Cook faces 15 counts including second, third and fourth degree sexual assault, strangulation and suffocation, and false imprisonment.

Cook's attorneys Christopher Van Wagner and Jessa Nicholson Goetz say their client is being misrepresented in the court of public opinion, that being social media and rumors. They say many of the more recent claims are unfounded and lack evidence.

They blame UW Police for asking for potential victims to come forward. Van Wagner says the contents of the criminal complaint are contrary to the information being spread.

"You have heard for 10 days that there is a man stalking women on the UW campus. Not true. For 10 days you've heard that there was a man who was keeping stalking notebooks. Not true. If you can find a reference to a stalking notebook in this, I will buy you a steak dinner," said Van Wagner.

Cook can’t leave the jail until non-monetary conditions are set.
