Body of 13-year-old boy in Portage found

Search crews have located the body of the 13-year-old boy who went missing in Portage on Sunday, according to the Portage Police Department.

The boy — 13-year-old Shayn Wolffarth, went missing at Silver Lake Beach on Sunday, June 17 while outside the swimming buoys with his inner tube. At 6:00 p.m. it was reported the boy’s inner tube was found with no sign of Wolffarth. When officers arrived on scene, they found multiple people in the water attempting to find him.

The body of the boy was found by Bruce's Legacy, a volunteer organization that provides emergency assistance and recovery operations for drowned victims to provide resolution for families.

The Portage Police Department requested assistance from Bruce’s Legacy after recovery efforts by the Portage Fire Department, Columbia County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, Sauk County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team, Wisconsin DNR, Milwaukee Police Department and the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office cadaver K9 were all unsuccessful.

Resources utilized, consisted of witness statements, rescue divers, sonar technology, remote submersible vehicles, GPS technology, an unmanned aerial vehicle (otherwise known as a drone), cadaver K9, aerial mapping and lake bottom dragging.

One diver sustained minor injuries during the initial rescue efforts and one firefighter was injured during recovery efforts.

The Portage Police and Fire Departments were assisted by Bruce’s Legacy, Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, Sauk County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin DNR, Milwaukee Police Department, Wisconsin State Patrol, Divine Savior EMS, Columbia County Medical Examiner’s Office, Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office, Wisconsin Bowfishing Association, City of Portage Park and Rec. and the City of Portage Department of Public Works.

The Portage Police Department thanked community partners who provided food, water and other supplies, including Festival Foods, Kwik Trip, Pizza Ranch, The Salvation Army, the American Legion, Portage Presbyterian Church, Pizza Hut, Corner Pocket and Culvers.

Silver Lake Road, Beach and Park are now all open again to the public, according to the Portage Police Department.
