Driver arrested for Madison crash causing gas leak

MADISON, Wis.(WMTV) Madison police have arrested the driver of a car that crashed and caused a gas leak. Several people were forced out of their homes on Thursday night.

Police say 19-year-old Cade Hellenbrand was behind the wheel when he crashed on East Dayton Street and hit a gas meter, causing a leak.

Residents returned to their homes around 10:15 p.m. on Thursday night, after buildings were evacuated when impact from a car versus building crash created a gas leak, according to Dane County Dispatch.

Crews from Madison Fire Department and Madison Police Department responded to a car versus building crash on the 1000 block of East Dayton Street at 9:30 Thursday night, according to Dane County Dispatch.

Madison Fire Department's Public Information Officer says buildings between North Ingersoll Street and North Few Street were evacuated after the impact created a gas leak. MG&E was on the scene and closed off the gas line.

Hellenbrand was arrested for first-offense OWI, possession of drug paraphernalia, not wearing a seat belt and failing to maintain control.
