COLUMBIA COUNTY, Wis. (WMTV) -- A man was arrested for his eighth OWI in Columbia County on Saturday night.

A vehicle was discovered sideways in the ditch on STH 146 near Shady Lane in the Town of Fountain Prairie at 7:13 p.m., according to the Columbia County Sheriff's Office.

A caller reported that the driver — who said his name was “Bob” — was not injured but “something wasn’t right with the driver." The caller had given 56-year-old Robert G. Koehler of Cambria a ride home.

Once a deputy arrived at the crash scene, another car was in the area. This second vehicle had been operated by Koehler, who returned to the crash scene. Koehler was the operator of the vehicle that had been located in the ditch as well, according to the department.

When Koehler was told he would be placed under arrest, he attempted to grab an open bottle of liquor from the vehicle and tried to drink from it.

Koehler was arrested for his eighth OWI offense, bail jumping, operating with open intoxicants and failure to maintain control of his vehicle.
