Construction for golf tournament begins

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) -- Construction began Monday for the American Family Insurance Golf Championship.

Scaffolding for bleachers, tents, chalets, and sky boxes arrived at University Ridge Golf Course on semi-trucks.

Nate Pokrass, the tournament director, says there are several new improvements to create a better fan experience this year. There will be more bleachers, expanded concession area and new hospitality venues. Pokrass also says there will be new video boards on the 17th and 18th greens.

"We still feel the energy from last year's trophy ceremony," says Pokrass. "Time went quickly, but it's always exciting to begin the construction timeline, you know it's arriving soon. The sun is out, the grass is green, and we're ready to begin tournament planning."

The American Family Insurance Championship takes place June 23 - 25. More than 56,000 fans were at the inaugural tournament in 2016. The event generated more than $1 million for charities in Wisconsin.
