SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (WMTV) -- A beloved cafe in Sun Prairie is going through a bittersweet transition. The owners of Country Cafe are hanging up their aprons for good.
Sue and Gary Merkes, as well as, Steve Johnson, have owned the Sun Prairie staple since 1994. Prior to owning the restaurant, they all worked there. Sue has worked at the cafe the longest -- around 44 years.
"It's sad but glad. A lot of memories here," Gary said.
Gary met his wife at the restaurant, and their three daughters grew up to work there too. Steve's children also worked at the beloved family hangout.
They have made enough memories to last a lifetime, and are looking forward to retirement and spending time with their grandchildren. The thing they will miss the most-- the people.
"We wouldn't be here without the customers," Sue said.
The customers-- many of whom are regulars-- will miss the owners but are excited for them. Some have asked to keep in touch and grab coffee with the owners from time to time.
As part of the new deal, the people who bought the Country Cafe must keep all the staff on, and have the same menu and recipes. They will take over the business on June 4.
