The Monona Police Department and the Monona Fire Department said crews responded to the 600 block of Pirate Island on Thursday just after 10 a.m. When crews arrived on scene, they found a woman in a kayak. She was monitoring the dog’s situation, but she was unable to reach the dog.

Authorities said fire crews were able to throw a safety rope to the kayaker and pull her up on the ice towards shore. As she was pulled towards shore, she was able to grab the dog by its collar and guide it to safety.

The dog was reunited with its owner.

Authorities would like to reminder everyone that with the warming temperatures, the ice is melting and dangerous conditions exist. They would like to thank the “Good Samaritan”. She was willing to take a change to help the dog, but this could have ended up much for tragically.
