East Madison Community Center named 'Design for a Difference' recipient
A Madison nonprofit will be getting a makeover of their facility as part of the national program, "Design for a Difference.
The East Madison Community Center (EMCC) was named as the 2018 recipient of the program on Wednesday night. The national program partners with FLOOR360.
EMCC has been a part of the Madison community for 50 years. It provides a safe place for families in the Truax neighborhood to gather, learn and support one another. The center began in a small apartment and moved to a multi-service center providing social, educational, recreational, and cultural programming.
Tom Moen, is the Executive Director of EMCC and has been working there for more than 40 years. He said this redesign is much needed as the facility hasn't been updated in 30 to 40 years.
"Espcially if you go back to the early days and those two cockroach infested apartments and the toilets that didn't work. When I walked in thre for the first day to start my job, I just looked around and said what did I get myself into," said Moen. "Well, now I know. This is really going to be a big payoff at the end."
Moen said EMCC serves about 5,000 people a year, most of them low-income kids and families.
"We do everything from recreation, nutrition, cultural, science - It's very holistic," said Moen.
Equally excited about the announcement is De'Kendrea Stamps, the assistant director.
"We're just so excited about this opportunity. It's so well-deserved by the people we serve every day," said Stamps. "I'm excited to see their faces when they find out this happening and see the changes that are going to be made in the center."
Stamps said very few people know about EMCC programs as it's tucked away in a residential area. But, she wants people to know that their services are free and open to the public.
Design for Difference Madison is made possible thanks to organizations and designers that donate their time, talents, and good to complete makeover local nonprofits. This is the fourth year for the event.
