Attorney General Brad Schimel is asking Wisconsinites to take part in stopping what he calls prescription painkiller abuse and an opioid epidemic in Wisconsin.

Saturday, October 28 is Drug Take Back Day. Across the state, disposal locations will be available for people to get rid of unused or expired medicine.

Monona Police Chief Walter Ostrenga said this is a serious issue in our community.

"You've heard of these parties where kids will just raid the drug medicine cabinet and bring it to a party and they dump it in a bowl and mix it up and take a chance at what they're taking... Not just that but pets ingest drugs. People break into houses and steal their drugs," said Ostrenga.

Schimel said stats show more than two thirds of people who've abused prescription painkillers got them illegally from a friend or family member.

"All Wisconsinites have a role in fighting the epidemic that is affecting every community in Wisconsin and thankfully their role is remarkably easy," said Schimel.
