MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - Buildings were evacuated after authorities discovered that a gas line had been hit in Belleville Tuesday afternoon.
Dane County Communications tells NBC15 that Belleville fire and police departments as well as utility WE Energies were called to 427 River Street around 4:21 p.m.
Only apartment complexes were evacuated in the direct vicinity of the leak. Authorities estimate that about 50 people were displaced.
Nearby roads are now back open after being closed.
Authorities called the 'minimum' evacuation in the immediate area as a precaution. Belleville fire says there is no threat to Belleville residents.
Local officials say they called the evacuation to avoid a major gas-related incident like what happened in Sun Prairie last summer.
"Since the events of last summer, that always plays in the back of your head,” said Jacob Myrland, public information officer for the Village Of Belleville. “You're ever more mindful of situations that happen in other communities. So we take extra steps to be as cautious as we can, get the information out to residents and try to facilitate the movement of people who live in town, that work in town, or who are coming to pick up their kids from day care."
Right now authorities do not know what caused the leak.
