Police responded to La Follette High School during an 8th grade promotion ceremony Tuesday due to a verbal argument between two families, according to the Madison Metropolitan School District.

In a letter sent to Sennett Middle School families, Principal Daniel Kigeya said the argument started in the gymnasium and continued into the parking lot.

The letter said La Follette security staff and Sennett staff responded quickly to mediate the situation, and called for additional police support.

"At the time that they [police] arrived, the situation had settled, and police were able to assist in directing traffic out of the parking lot," Kigeya said in the letter.

Kigeya said the 8th grade promotion ceremony is a special event for the Sennett students and community.

"We want to celebrate these students and everything they've worked toward over the last three years. We do not want this unfortunate incident to overshadow what has been an incredibly positive, successful last school year for these students."

Madison police said no arrests were made in the incident.
