POY SIPPI, Wis. (AP) -- Firefighters from several communities worked to put out a fire at an empty elementary school in Waushara County.

Poy Sippi Fire Chief Tom Marini says flames were coming through the roof at the school when firefighters arrived about 4:30 a.m. Friday. Marini tells WBAY-TV the fire was in the middle of the one-story building. Firefighters were able to save the gym and additions on either side of the building.

The former Poy Sippi Elementary School has been vacant for several years. Recently, a food service company was using the building, but moved out about two months ago.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
