MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - Special honors for those who give back in a big way Thursday after Gov. Tony Evers honored 11 individuals and 2 programs at the 2019 Governor's Service Awards ceremony.

According to a press release, this year’s honorees have helped the community by bridging the educational achievement gap, supporting people through recovery from opioid addiction and honoring veterans.

"Every day ordinary people roll up their sleeves and help their neighbors - not with the expectation of recognition, or paycheck - but rather, out of the kindness and generosity of their hearts,” said Gov. Evers. "I want you to know that your service and volunteerism set an example for your friends, your families and people all across the state."

The Governor's Service Awards honors outstanding volunteers, national service participants, programs and AmeriCorps alumni that have helped to address serious social needs across Wisconsin.
