MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) --- A panel of guest judges spent their afternoon choosing the nation's best grilled cheese sandwich, only using Wisconsin cheese.

Out of 1,600 entries, judges tasted grilled cheeses from the top ten finalists for the Wisconsin Milk Marketing Board's best grilled cheese in America.

"When you come to a place like Madison, the heart of cheese culture and really the best cheese culture in the country, it's great to do a contest like this where you get to bring attention to the food scene in the Midwest," said Trevor Meers, editorial content director at Midwest Living Magazine.

The sandwiches weren't your average grilled cheese. Some ingredients included shrimp, grits, cheese curds and even fermented cabbage.

However, for the judges cheese was the most important ingredient.

"Is the cheese being overpowered, can we taste the different types of cheese, are they balanced well with the different flavors of the sandwiches?" said Roshni Gurnani, winner of the Food Network show, Chopped.

The winner was the Mississippi Comeback featuring Wisconsin fontina and cheddar cheese.

The recipe was submitted by Lorie Roach from Mississippi.
