MADISON, Wis (WMTV) - The Alzheimer's and Dementia Alliance held its 9th annual even today to raise awareness of the disease in the African-American community.
Saturday's event featured memory screenings and workshops for caregivers.
The event also featured a performance by the Amazing Grace Chorus. Everyone in the chorus has Alzheimer's, dementia or is caring for someone with the disease.
One member, whose husband has Alzheimer's, said the chorus gives them a sense of community and family.
"It may be the biggest gift of all, music in itself. But, in this chorus in particular, this group of people have come together and formed a family," Joanne Pier said.
Event organizers said they hope the event can help break the stigma around mental illness and encourage people to be screened.
