Hundreds of new applicants ask for hemp growing and processing licenses

MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) -- The number of applications for growing hemp and processing the product for 2019 have nearly doubled compared to 2018,

On Wednesday, the Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP) released the number of applications they have received so far for 2019. The deadline to apply for a license is March 1.

So far, 413 total hemp grower applications were received, 329 are new applicants. 84 people are applying for registration again. In 2018, the state received 260 hemp growing license applications.

In November 2017, Governor Scott Walker legalized hemp farming in Wisconsin. 2018 was the first year for growing hemp. In 2018, 248 growing licenses and 100 hemp processing licenses were approved by DATCP.

As of January 2, 109 hemp growing licenses were issued as well as 83 processing licenses.
