DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. (WIFR) -- An Illinois State Police trooper is killed after being hit head on by a wrong-way driver Saturday morning.

Officials say District 15 Trooper Gerald Ellis was struck just before 3:30 a.m. Saturday while driving west on I-94 near Green Oaks in Lake County.

Police say the other driver was traveling east in the westbound lane before striking the trooper.

Ellis was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead just after 4 a.m.

Trooper Ellis was an 11-year veteran of Dist. 15 in Downers Grove.

Saturday's crash comes just two days after Trooper Brooke Jones-Story of District 16 was fatally struck while inspecting a semi-trailer on Bypass 20 near Freeport.

"While the men and women of the Illinois State Police are still grieving
our recent loss, it is with profound heartache and unfathomable sadness that we inform you of the death of another fallen trooper," said ISP Acting Director Brendan Kelly in a statement.

Ellis will be taken by procession to the Lake County Coroner's Office Saturday morning.
