Injured firefighter meets aspiring hero

SUN PRAIRIE, Wis (WMTV)-- After raising more than $6,000 for the Sun Prairie relief fund, Gavin Martin met the firefighters he aspires to be one day.

Gavin Martin, a 5-year-old boy, donated the money from his Lake Mills lemonade stand to the Sun Prairie Relief Fund.

"It's crazy to think that we just posted a picture of the lemonade stand and here we are!" Gavin's Mom, Linda Martin said.

On Wednesday, Gavin visited the Sun Prairie Fire Department dressed in his uniform to meet firefighter Ryan Welch. Welch was injured two weeks ago in the Sun Prairie explosion that took the life of Captain Cory Barr.

"It was very exciting to see him up and around and moving," Linda said.

Even though Welch is still recovering from his injuries, he splashed in puddles and spent time with Gavin and showed him how the fire trucks work.

"See it up there all folded," Welch explained to Gavin.

The hero said he loves seeing kids like Gavin visit the department. He told Gavin he has some healing to do still but will be back at work next week.
