MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) --- Veterans marched 22 miles with 22 pounds of belongings to raise awareness to the issue of veteran suicide.

On average 22 veterans will commit suicide every day. To highlight the issue participants walked 22 miles carrying 22 pounds of gear on their backs, all to start a conversation.

"Whether it's just today or forever at this VFW, providing that information where people can get help because one of the most difficult things about suicide period is how you ask somebody if they're thinking about hurting themselves or killing themselves," said Kerry Mcallen with 85th Support Command.

Participants stopped at different VFW posts along the way, carrying a US 50 star flag throughout the march.

All proceeds raised at VFW Post 1318 will go directly to the Campaign To Change Direction. The goal of the campaign is to change the culture of mental health in America.
