A man was arrested in connection to a bank robbery near the north side of Madison Friday afternoon.

An alarm was activated at Home Savings Bank on 3700 East Washington Ave. just before 3 p.m., according to the Madison Police Department.

The bank was robbed by a man described to be in his 20's with a thin build, wearing a black coat with a hood and black knit hat. He was carrying a purse and left the bank on foot, according to police.

A Parking Enforcement Officer in the area spotted a male matching this description running from the area of the bank near Reindahl Park.

MPD officers caught up with and detained this individual. Matthew Kitsembel, age 30 of Janeville, was arrested on one count of armed robbery and taken to the Dane County Jail.

Kitsembel told police that a heroin addiction made him desperate and that's why he robbed the bank. He did so by passing a note demanding money while claiming he had a gun.

Police say no weapon was found and the suspect later admitted that he didn't have one.
