Surveillance images and information from witnesses helped authorities identify and arrest a Madison woman in connection to a fatal shooting early Sunday morning.

Joel Despain, a spokesperson with the Madison Police Department, said 21-year-old Kenyairra I.S. Gadson was arrested early Monday morning on a tentative charge of first degree intentional homicide.

Despain said 21-year-old Steven Villegas of Madison was shot in the State Street Campus Ramp on the Frances Street side around 2:00 a.m. He was transported to a local hospital with a life-threatening gun shot wound to the torso. Detectives do not believe this was a random act of gun violence.

Dane County Medical Examiner said Villegas was pronounced dead shortly after he arrived to the hospital. He died as a result of homicidal firearm related trauma.

Detectives have determined there was no dispute at Whiskey Jacks Saloon that led to the shooting.

Anyone with information, photos or video related to these incidents are being asked to call Madison Police Department at (608) 266-4275. If you wish to remain anonymous, contact Madison Area Crime Stoppers at (608) 266-6014.
