MADISON, Wisc. -- For two hours, members of the Sustainable Madison Committee sat in front of a packed room, dissecting one proposal word by word. At one point, there was a discussion and movement simply to remove the word "the" from one clause.
But the long wait was worth it for environmental activists who stood to applaud the result - the passing of a resolution that aims to ensure a sustainable energy future for Madison.
Monday evening's meeting was dominated by the examination of the proposal, which brought numerous speakers to the table, some with groups like RePower Madison, the Sierra Club and Beyond Coal. Speakers emphasized the importance of solidifying the proposal with concrete timelines and budget specifics - or outlining the role of a consultant who could assist in the fiscal elements and timely execution of energy change.
