Madison Water Utility crews work to repair water main breaks
Madison Water Utility crews are braving the cold after a number of water main breaks in the city. Since Christmas Eve, about two water main breaks have happened every day. Seven water mains broke on Monday.
Jim Garde with Madison Water Utility said it is a combination of aging pipes and the cold weather that is leaving crews with a lot of work to do.
The breaks leave neighbors without water and can usually take four to 10 hours to fix.
"The biggest thing is what we find when we dig it. How bad it is? What circumstance we have when we dig it up? Can you just fix it quick or do you have to cut into a section of the water main?" said Garde.
Madison Water Utility leaves notes on the doors of homes affected encouraging people to draw water into containers before the work starts.
