MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - The Crossfit Games have committed to holding their competition in Madison through 2021. Representatives from the Crossfit Games joined Dane County Executive Joe Parisi and Madison Area Sports Commission President Deb Archer for Thursdays announcement.
According to a press release, more than 70,000 people attended the 2017 Crossfit Games in Madison, generating $12 million in spending throughout Dane County.
Crossfit Games General Manager Justin Bergh said, "Our first year in Madison proved that it was a great fit. We are looking forward to building excitement with the residents of Madison."
The attention from the Games fares well for area businesses- particularly restaurants and hotels.
Aureliano Montes is the General Manager of Canteen in downtown Madison. Canteen is part of the Food Fight Restaurant group.
Montes estimated that sales at his establishment were up roughly 30-40% during last year's games. Many restaurants in the Food Fight group, including Canteen, crafted unique menus targeted toward the crossfit crowd last year.
He said the restaurants will be adapting their menus this year from what they learned in the year before.
"We still haven't finished the menu but we talked about the menu already," Montes said. "Some of our restaurants actually ran out of those proteins. We ran out of those proteins on the second day, I believe."
Montes anticipates they will be stocking up on meats and upping their portion sizes.
"These people will eat big portions of food, it almost doubles."
The Games end up being a very busy five days for Montes and his crew, but they are not complaining.
"I'm just thankful they picked Madison. It has a huge impact on our economy," Montes explained.
Caitlin Suemnicht with Food Fight group said they also learned that some visitors aren't necessarily as strict with their diets as they may have anticipated.
She said, "For a lot of people this is like their vacation. So they are looking to get that 'taste of Wisconsin' with cheese curds, and beer."
The 2018 Crossfit Games take place at the Alliant Energy Center. The 2018 Games will be held August 1-5.
