Off-duty Racine police officer killed in overnight bar shooting

RACINE, Wis. (WMTV) - An off-duty Racine police officer is dead after he was shot and killed at a bar in Racine Monday night.

The Racine Police Department confirmed Officer John Hetland died while trying to stop an armed robbery at Teezers bar. Hetland is a 24-year veteran of the Racine Police Department.

Officer said a masked man came into the bar with a gun. When Hetland tried to intervene, wrestling the man to the ground, he was shot and killed. The shooter then ran out the door.

Police have not found the shooter, and are actively searching for the suspect. They are asking people in the area to stay inside, with their outdoor lights and video equipment on to help them find him.

Madison police chief Mike Koval released a statement, saying "Our hearts go out to the family, friends and law enforcement community of Racine Police Officer John Hetland who lost his life last night. Officer Hetland was off-duty at the time, but with this 'job,' you are never really 'off.'"
