MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) -- UPDATE: Madison police say car thieves are attempting to disguise stolen vehicles by painting them different colors, as a way to avoid police detection.

Police now believe that suspects painted black an SUV they stole on Milky Way on June 18.

Madison police said a masked burglar broke into a home on the east side and stole an SUV.

According to MPD, the break-in happened at 12:41 a.m. in the 400 block of Milky Way. The victims believe the suspect got into their home by using a garage door opener that was inside an unlocked car parked in the driveway.

A family member in the house saw the burglar through a cracked bedroom door. He fled after taking keys to their 2016 Toyota RAV4.

The burglar is described as tall and thin and wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.
