Students and staff at Middleton High School are collecting items and money to send to people impacted by the devastation of Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

"I've been watching it on the news. It's really devastating," said Student Gabriella Butler.

MHS science teachers Melissa Burgos and Jackie Curran coordinated the effort.

"My whole family lives over there, except for my mom and dad, so getting one call from them a month, knowing they don't have really food or water. It's hard to hear so what we're trying to do is heal our own community by healing another community," said Burgos. "So far, it's mostly been students and parents and a lot of staff. A lot of times, I just teach chemistry and biology and that's not all what I teach. I teach life skills and how to be good person and that's what I want to see in my students."

"We wanted to help the people in Puerto Rico because they're going through a rough time right now and we think this will help them out while they wait for their power to come back," said Student Madelyn Hoffmann. "Mrs. Burgos is our advisory teacher and she means so much to us and we want to help out her and her family and everyone else out there who needs help."

More than 3,500 dollars has been raised along with around one thousand dollars worth of items collected. The collection started at the beginning of October and will go until there is no longer a need.
