JANESVILLE, Wis. (WMTV) - Several schools in Janesville will be closed on Friday as authorities continue to search for a gun store burglary suspect.

The School District of Janesville, St. Williams Catholic School, St. Paul's Lutheran School, St. Matthew's Lutheran School, and Rock Prairie Montessori made the announcement late Thursday night after receiving an update from Janesville Police.

UW-Rock County is cancelling all classes and activities Friday and the campus will be closed to all students and the public.

Milton schools will also be closed, unless the situation changes overnight.

Fort Atkinson schools will remain under a soft lockdown on Friday.

Several schools in South Central Wisconsin were on several forms of soft lockdown and heightened awareness as authorities searched for a dangerous burglary suspect on Thursday.

A soft lockdown indicates business within the building will continue as usual, but no students will be allowed to exit the building for recess or other school related purposes. Extra law enforcement officials are also present at the school.

The School District of Janesville went under a soft lockdown Thursday morning.

Janesville Police say at 7:13 a.m, Thursday, they received a call about a suspicious person near Lincoln Elementary School. Police say the person was seen exiting a vehicle, stumble, and pick up a long gun from the ground on the north side of the school.

Authorities say the combination of the burglary suspect search and the suspicious person contributed to the school district initiating the soft lockdown at all Janesville schools.

Schools in Edgerton,Milton, Evansville, Beloit, Lake Mills, Whitewater, Palmyra, Fort Atkinson, Watertown, Waterloo, Jefferson, Darien, and Delavan also took safety precautions.
