Multiple vehicles were destroyed in a fire in the township of Merrimac early Saturday morning.

A 2007 Yamaha golf cart had been charging overnight when the battery pack caught fire at Merry Macs Campground on Halweg Road just before 2:45 a.m., according to the Sauk County Sheriff's Department.

The occupants of a park model camper noticed the fire but were unable to extinguish it before it spread to a nearby wooden deck and plastic shed. The fire then spread from the deck to the camper, forcing the occupants outside for safety.

Nearby, another unoccupied park model camper also caught fire, along with a 2016 Honda Odyssey minivan. Both campers as well as the minivan and golf cart were destroyed in the fire.

Initially responding to the fire were members of the Merrimac Fire Department and Sauk Prairie EMS along with Sauk County Deputies. Once on scene additional help was requested from the Sauk City Fire Department, the Prairie du Sac Fire Department, the Baraboo Fire Department, the Sauk County Humane Society and the Salvation Army.
