MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) -- Chuck Todd, NBC’s Political Director, was in Madison speaking to recent graduates of UW Madison’s journalism school.
NBC15’s Hannah Flood met up with him to talk about Wisconsin’s role in the 2020 Presidential race.
“I think and have a colleague who believes that if you were on a desert island and you could only get the results from one state Wisconsin might be the one you would pick. I think this is a state that is a swing state because of how polarized it is and in a way Wisconsin’s politics have been as polarized as the nation’s politics,” Todd said.
Todd went on to say that of the three states President Trump flipped in 2016, Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania, Wisconsin is the most likely to go for Trump in 2020.
He said he thinks Democratic candidates for president recognize Wisconsin’s importance in 2020.
“I find it fascinating how many Democrats get into the race and as a way to make a statement to Democratic voters that they're not going to mess up the general election like Hillary Clinton, did by not coming to Wisconsin, notice how many of them have already made Wisconsin a primary stop,” Todd said. “What they're really trying to do is send a message to Democratic donors and voters that ‘hey I’m not going to ignore Wisconsin. I’m not going to make the same mistakes that Hillary Clinton made.’"
