Outdoor recreation the driving force for toursim in Wisconsin

DANE COUNTY, Wis. (WMTV) Outdoor recreation is the driving force for tourism in Wisconsin, according to Sara Meany, the tourism secretary designee.

At Sassy Cow Creamery in Columbus on Tuesday, Meany, Gov. Tony Evers, and Deb Archer of Destination Madison shared several new stats surrounding tourism as part of National Travel and Tourism Week in America.

In 2018, tourism added $21.6 billion into the state's economy. Meany said jobs sustained by tourism in 2018 reached more than 199,000 jobs. The biggest growth was in the recreation sector with more than an 8% increase. She said one in every 13 jobs is related to tourism.

National Travel and Tourism Week (NTTW) is the annual salute to travel in America. During the first full week in May, communities nationwide unite around a common theme to showcase travel's contributions to the economy and American jobs
