MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - A driver was were lucky to survive after a deer plowed through a truck windshield along STH 16 in Columbia County.

"Although deer are most active from October to January, deer are still very active at dawn and dusk. Use caution while traveling," according to the Columbia County Traffic Safety Commission.

There were almost 20,000 deer-car crashes in Wisconsin in 2017, according to the most recent data the Wisconsin DNR has collected.

While out on the road, the Wisconsin Humane Society says to slow down at deer crossings; to not overdrive your headlights by driving too fast; and to use your high beams while driving at night.

The Humane Society also says to avoid swerving from your lane to miss the deer because that could cause your car to lose control. Also keep in mind that deer usually travel in groups.
