SUN PRAIRIE, Wis. (WMTV) -- Sun Prairie police believe a man who was shot Monday night was targeted.

The shooting happened around 9:17 p.m. Officers got multiple calls reporting the shots were fired in a parking lot in the 500 block of Athletic Way, between Fitness Run and Tower Drive.

When officers got there, they found a 45-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the lower abdomen. He was taken to a local hospital and according to the Sun Prairie Police Department, is in stable condition.

Police took witness statements and believe that three men wearing masks were involved in the shooting. Two of them left the scene in a vehicle, while the other ran away on foot. The preliminary investigation indicates that this was a targeted incident.

NBC15 spoke with employees Monday evening at the nearby Prairie Athletic Club. They said the shooting did not happen on the property, and the facility was not closed down or placed on lock down.

Sun Prairie police do not have any of the men involved in custody and are still looking for them.
