Madison, Wis (WMTV)-- One program is helping give students a head start for college.

The Dane County Youth Apprenticeship Program is designed for juniors and seniors in high school. It provides them with hands on experience before embarking on their careers.

Spencer Nellis is a youth apprentice at EVCO, a manufacturing plant in Madison. He said the program is getting him ready for college.

"Ultimately I want to go to a college like the UW," he said. "I can use a lot of the skills I'm using here at EVCO to have in my job once I finally get out of college."

The Youth Apprenticeship program offers students the chance to earn a college credit as well as get paid for the work done.

Students can choose from 11 program areas ranging from agriculture to transportation.

For more information on the program, a family information session is being held at Biopharmaceutical Technology Center Institute on February 20th at 6:30pm.
