MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) --- During Project Money 2016, the Ehlerts and three other families are learning how to save money and pay off debt.

The Ehlerts are new parents with new goals for their now family of three.

Just as Liz and Drew Ehlert are teaching their 7-month-old son Beckett to crawl and walk, they too are taking baby steps toward a better financial future.

They said they recently sold their condo at a loss and basically wiped out their savings.

"We knew being here that with a new child, we needed help, we needed direction," Drew said.

"Our budget was a proverbial yellow light. It was just a suggestion," Liz said.

The Ehlerts now have three main goals, to build back a savings account, pay down Liz's student loan, and open a college savings account for their son.

Their coach from Summit Credit Union told them no bill is holy, so they should examine every one to see where they can cut expenses.
